How our guides are researched

A guide is only useful if you can trust it on the day you read it. So we keep the process short, steady and out in the open: every guide is checked before it goes live, pages are reviewed in batches each quarter, and if something’s wrong, we’d genuinely like to hear about it.

THE PROCESS

Four steps, every guide

01

Checked before it's published

Nothing goes live on a first draft. Each guide is read through and checked before publishing, with an eye on whether the steps make sense in order and whether the advice holds up for Australian readers.

02

Reviewed in quarterly batches

Rules, seasons and settings shift. Rather than leave pages to drift, we go back over published guides in batches each quarter and revise what needs it.

03

Updates noted in the opening lines

When a guide changes in a way that matters, we say so near the top, where you’ll see it before you start. The address stays the same, so bookmarks and shared links keep working. The Updates page explains the policy in full.

04

Corrections invited

If you spot a mistake or something that’s out of date, tell us. A correction isn’t a nuisance; it’s how a guide gets better, and a real person reads every message.
A chrome single-handle kitchen tap running a thin stream of water over a metal sink, with a turquoise cloth hanging from the spout.

Hot water guides are a good example of why we check twice: a setting that suits one home isn’t automatically safe in another.

STATE & SEASON

Why the differences come first

A lot of practical advice online is written as if one answer fits the whole country. It rarely does. Water rules, the best time to get up on the roof and what to expect from a wet season all depend on where you are and when. That’s why our Hands-on how-tos flag state and season differences up front, before the steps, so you know early whether the advice changes for you.

More in the Hands-on lane, or see where our guides apply.

WHERE WE STOP

When you need a professional instead

Our how-tos are for the jobs and plans you can sensibly handle yourself. They aren’t a substitute for a licensed tradesperson or for professional advice, and we say so in the guide when a job crosses that line: gas and electrical work, hot water system adjustments beyond the basics, or anything on a roof you’re not confident about.

We don’t offer trade services, bookings or personalised advice ourselves. What we can do is help you understand the job well enough to ask the right questions. The hot water safety guide and the scald prevention guidelines are written with exactly that in mind.

Margin note

Hot water is where a small setting matters most. Before you change anything at home, read the hot water scald prevention guidelines, then call a licensed plumber for anything past the basics.

FAIR QUESTIONS

Is this a real, independent site?

Who's behind it?

We’re a small independent website edited by Celeste Foster. We’re online only, with no shopfront or office. More on the About page.

Is anything being sold to me?

No. Nothing is sold or booked here. The site is guides, how-tos and a way to get in touch, nothing more.

How do I know a page is still current?

Check the opening lines for an update note, and see how and when we review. If something still looks wrong, the contact form is the quickest way to flag it.
